1970s

West German

Sold 3/20/2022

Ceramic vase with gray-green and burgundy glazes accented with brown lava glaze in a zig-zag pattern. Marked on the bottom with the mold number “242-22” and “W. Germany”. Manufactured by Scheurich, likely in the 1960’s or 1970’s.

Alois Scheurich began producing ceramics under the Scheurich name in 1954. Shortly after, the celebrated designer Heinz Siery was hired by the firm to develop production techniques and designs. The ingenious strategy of Scheurich was to produce simple forms that could be decorated in a variety of glazes and techniques. In the 1960’s and 70’s Scheurich’s designs were characterized by brown-and-green color schemes, with some designs featuring bold uses of lava glaze. This example is unique for its textured zig-zag lava glaze.
