Übelacker Keramik Fat Lava Vase

1970s

West German

Sold 3/24/2022

Ceramic vase in the shape of a stylized pithari (oil jar) decorated with alternating bands of smooth yellow and textured, brown, lava-style glazes. Manufactured by the West German Üebelacker Keramik company. Marked on the bottom with the mold number 1778/22.

In the 1960’s and 70’s, West German pottery producers began manufacturing ceramics in flashy colors contrasting with thick, textured glazes. The style, known as Fat Lava by collectors was made by a variety of different manufacturers. The Übelacker Keramik (Ü-keramik) company was founded in 1930’s by Johann Übelacker who had been producing tin wares since 1909. Johann Übelacker died in the mid 50s and his three sons took over the businesses. Ü-keramik exported a lot of ceramics, especially to Austria and Scandinavia.

In excellent condition with no cracks, crazing or other signs of wear. Due to its textured glazes, there are some pinhead-sized divots of glaze loss from the manufacturing process (see photos.) Approximately 8 ½ in tall, 4 in at the widest part, 2 ¼ in at the mouth, 3 in at the base.
