Tole Ware Candlestick Holders

1950s
Sold 02/11/2022
Gilt, sheet metal candlestick holders in the form of rosebuds and leaves. Tole is both the name for hand painted metal and wood, as well as for the craft of sheet metal or tin art. ‘Tôle peinte’ (painted sheet metal) was initially created to protect raw metal from corrosion and rust. Toleware was originally popularized in the 18th century and was used to make every variety of object from serving trays to lampshades. A mid-20th popularization with pastorale artforms gave toleware an international resurgence. These candlestick holders are circa 1950 and have developed a lovely patina. Condition is very good with no cracks, missing pieces or loss of gilding.
