Generously sized stoneware rice bowl with ribbed sides and an applied pedestal foot. The bowl is decorated with a shino glaze which varies in color from cream to red. It is further highlighted by ash and carbon trappings that give it a mottled appearance. It is unsigned, but the maker was clearly a skilled artisan.
Shino is a traditional Japanese high feldspar glaze that has cream to orange color flashing, also known as blushing. The main characteristic of shino glaze is of a satin-like white color, occasionally with bright, red – orange or black spotting, a result of carbon trapping in the firing process. Usually in firing a Shino glaze, the potter utilizes a wood-fired anagama kiln. Shino firing tends to use lower temperatures in comparison to celadon and porcelain firing, but fires for a longer period of time with a slow cooling process.
Approximately 5 ¾ inches diameter, 3 ¾ inches tall, 3 inches deep. In excellent condition with no cracks or chips. There is some visible crazing and some pinholes and pits in the glaze surface, but this is to be expected with a shino glaze and adds to the rustic appeal of the vessel (see photos.)
