Impressive Murano glass ashtray of fine, frothy pulegoso incased in ultra-clear cristallo glass with a light amber interior bowl. The ashtray has been deeply tooled into a modern, biomorphic, triangular pattern. The lip features 3 indentations for cigarettes.
Pulegoso glass is a difficult technique, produced by adding bicarbonate of soda, gasoline, or other substances to the molten glass. The bubbles make the glass semiopaque and give the surface an irregular texture. On this ashtray, the pulegoso layer is further incased in a layer of very clear cristallo glass, optically suspending the bubbles within the glass in a sommerso or suspended technique. The surface is very smooth on the sides, the interior is slightly pebbled. The base has been ground flat. It is unmarked, vintage Murano art glass. This quality example is of a design attributed to Archimede Seguso of Vetri d'Arte. The design is from the 1930’s/1940’s, with this piece likely made in the 1950’s. The pattern is a slightly organic, Art Deco form. This piece will be a fine addition to a vintage Venetian art glass collection.
The ashtray has no chips, cracks, scratches or other signs of defect or use. The bowl measures approximately 6 ¾” in diameter and 2 ¾” tall. It has a substantial heft to it, weighing approximately 4 pounds, unpacked.
