Porcelain platter with white underglaze and an airbrushed, cobalt oxide rim. The piece features an embossed pattern of an orchid and a pebbled texture.
The platter is 1960’s blue and white Arita ware manufactured by Saikai. Arita ware is the name of a certain type of porcelain fired in the vicinity of Arita-cho in Saga Prefecture. Boasting a 400-year history, Arita is also renowned as the area where porcelain was fired for the first time in Japan. Established 1946 in Japan, home goods conglomerate Saikai started sales in the locality of Arita and Hasamiyaki and are known for their beautiful white and blue porcelain.
The elegant effect of the cobalt oxide highlights the slipper orchids which are characterised by the slipper-shaped pouches of their flowers. In excellent condition, with no chips, cracks or crazing. It measures 13 ¼” inches in diameter, 2 ⅛” inches deep.
