Stunning cobalt-blue porcelain platter decorated with Japanese water irises in contrasting gold and silver overglaze. Manufactured by Koransha; the oldest creator of arita ware and porcelain tableware in Japan. This piece is in their iconic lapis lazuli Ruri glaze and expertly hand painted and gilded. Arita ware is the name of a certain type of porcelain fired in the vicinity of Arita-cho in Saga Prefecture. Boasting a 400-year history, Arita is also renowned as the area where porcelain was fired for the first time in Japan. The Koransha pottery was first founded in 1689 by Matashiro Fukagawa. It was then called Eizaemon Fukagawa and was one of the very first potteries to begin porcelain production in Arita. From its very beginning the company focused on making products for overseas export. Each piece of Koransha is very finely painted. They are special pieces, considered artworks.
In excellent condition, with no chips, cracks or crazing. There is some very minor damage to some of the silver overglaze, consistent with age and use. It measures 11” inches in diameter, 2” inches deep.
