The Imperial Glass Company was founded in 1901 by Edward Muhleman along the riverbank in Bellaire, Ohio. Bellaire had already gained the nickname “Glass City” due to the large number of glass factories there. The factory went into production in 1904. Imperial first began making carnival glass in 1908. In the early 1900’s, many companies created carnival glass in endless combinations of iridescence and glass colors. It hit its zenith in the 1920’s, though collectors began taking it seriously in the 1950’s. The name carnival glass was coined as pieces were sometimes given as prizes at carnivals and country fairs. Carnival glass gets its iridescent sheen from the application of metallic salts while the glass is still hot from the pressing.
