Shallow, stoneware tea bowl with iron tenmoku style glaze. The glaze is lightly caramel colored at the lip, becoming increasingly dark, almost black where it pools in the bowl and along the outside edge. Its shallow shape requires both hands to use, part of the humility and focus of the tea ceremony. The use of rough stoneware and simple brown glaze gives it a wabi-sabi imperfection. Marked with maker’s seal on the bottom "亮" (Ryō).

In excellent condition with no chips, cracks, crazing or other signs of use. Approximately 5 1/4in wide at mouth, 2 1/8in wide at base, 2 3/4in tall.
