Bullet-shaped, raku fired, white stoneware vase with an iron red glaze. The raku firing has left the bottom black and the rest of the body scorched. The piece was artfully dipped into glaze, giving a subtle, triangular design around the vase. The lip and the base band were left unglazed. A single incised line runs along the bottom, forming a band which is almost uniformly black.

Raku firings are very fast and very hot. Bisque-fired pots are quickly heated in an 1,800° kiln, then removed from the kiln and dropped in a combustible material. Straw, paper and pine needles are commonly used. The material ignites and the flames stain the unglazed pottery black. The flames are then smothered and the pots are cooled. The amount of exposure to the fire the pots have and the method of cooling affects the color and texture of the glaze.

Condition is excellent with no chips, cracks, crazing or other signs of use. It is signed “03 Pareto †” Approximently 7" tall, 4 1/2" wide.
